ABOUT THE INDUSTRY

Indian Steel Industry

The Indian Steel Industry is a vital pillar of the nation’s economic and infrastructural development, with the secondary steel sector playing a central role in driving inclusive and decentralized growth. Contributing nearly 60% of the country’s total steel production, the secondary sector includes induction furnace units, electric arc furnaces, rolling mills, and re-rolling mills. These units are typically spread across semi-urban and rural regions, promoting local employment, fostering entrepreneurship, and ensuring the availability of steel for both large-scale infrastructure projects and small-scale industries. Their adaptability, cost-effectiveness, and growing emphasis on modern technology make them crucial to meeting India’s ambitious target of 300 million tonnes of steel capacity by 2030. The Indian steel industry, while growing rapidly and offering strong potential, faces key challenges such as raw material volatility, high energy and logistics costs, infrastructure gaps, and mounting decarbonization pressures.
Global factors like trade barriers and the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism further complicate the landscape. Addressing these requires cohesive efforts through policy reforms, technological upgrades, and stakeholder collaboration. At the same time, opportunities abound in green steel, circular economy practices, and advanced technologies like EIF and hydrogen-based DRI — all crucial for aligning the sector with India’s sustainable growth and net zero ambitions.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The 37th National Conference of the AIIFA SUSTAINABLE STEEL MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION will be held on 19th–20th September 2025 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, Goregaon, Mumbai, under the theme “Profitable Sustainability – Green Steel: A Future Ecosystem.”

This flagship event will focus on aligning economic growth with environmental sustainability within India’s secondary steel sector. It aims to bring together key stakeholders across the steel value chain to address pressing sectoral challenges, promote low-carbon growth strategies, and accelerate the adoption of renewable energy, energy-efficient technologies, and circular economy practices such as scrap recycling. As India advances toward global leadership in steel production, the conference will serve as a critical platform for driving policy dialogue, fostering innovation, and enhancing industrial competitiveness.

The event is expected to attract over 300 exhibitors and 3,500 delegates, including representatives from CPSEs, government departments, research institutions, sponge iron and DRI units, induction furnace-based producers, and allied industries. Esteemed organizations such as CSIR-NML, Joint Plant Committee (JPC), NISST, UNDP, and SRTMI, along with AIIFA members, will participate in collaborative sessions aimed at shaping a sustainable, resilient, and future-ready steel ecosystem.
